How to shoot your first Reel with a phone

A practical beginner exercise for planning, filming and reviewing a short vertical video with your phone.

Start with one useful idea

Choose a subject you can show clearly: a favourite outfit detail, a corner of your room or a simple product demonstration. Write down who the video is for and what they should understand by the end. For this exercise, aim for a 20–30-second story. That is a practice constraint, not a rule for platform performance.

Write a three-part script

Open with the point of the video, explain or demonstrate it, then finish with a useful takeaway. For example: “Here is how this small room makes space for a work desk.” Show the desk, the storage and the walking space. Read your words aloud; shorten anything that feels unnatural.

Plan three shots before recording

Make a tiny shot list: a wide view to establish the scene, a medium view of the action and a close-up of the important detail. Hold the phone vertically for this exercise and keep your subject easy to see. Leave room around text and key details, then check the preview in the app where you intend to publish.

Check light and sound first

Clean the lens and place the phone on a stable support. Try facing a window instead of standing with a bright window behind you. Record one sentence and listen back using headphones. If the voice is unclear, move closer or choose a quieter space before recording the full video. A microphone is useful only when you know it is recording correctly.

Edit the message, then the decoration

Choose the clearest takes, remove distracting pauses and use the detail shots to support your words. Add captions and check the spelling yourself. Watch on a phone with sound on, then without it: is the main idea understandable in both cases? Use footage and audio you have permission to use.

Your first assignment

Make two versions of the opening while keeping the rest of the video the same. Show them to a trusted viewer and ask which introduction made the subject clearer. Save your script, shot list and final edit together. These show your process as you begin building a portfolio.
